ArtMatter is an independent arts publisher based in London, dedicated to producing books that explore the intersection of modernity, and tradition across art, design, and culture. Our work is grounded in a material-led approach, with a particular focus on processes, techniques, and the exchange between historical knowledge, and contemporary practice.
Our first publication, Art of Wax, examines wax as a medium for artistic expression, tracing its historical significance, and its continued relevance today through studio demonstrations by leading practitioners. Our latest title, Mitsuro Hikime, by Kumiko Kihara, and Elsa Tierney, is the first publication of its kind to document this specialised wax technique in depth. It combines precise technical instruction from the Tomoyasu School in Japan, with detailed chapters from the authors, alongside a broader survey of the technique’s historical, and contemporary applications. Published as a large-format hardback, it includes 272 pages, and 338 colour illustrations.
Alongside publishing, ArtMatter develops a public programme of workshops, talks, and events that bring the content of our books into direct, practical engagement. These include hands-on sessions such as our Mitsuro Hikime Wax Sculpting Workshop in East London, where participants learn to make, and work with mitsuro wax through guided experimentation. We also host talks, and presentations, most recently Mitsuro Hikime: Tracing the Line, Past and Present at the Goldsmiths’ Centre.
We also source, and curate out-of-print books that align with our interests. These titles will be available in our forthcoming pre-owned section, with links to online archives wherever possible.
We welcome submissions, and proposals for new publications that resonate with our focus. If you would like to share a proposal, please contact us with an outline. As a small team, we may not be able to respond to all enquiries immediately.
