Book extract
Henry Moore is sixty-two. It is hard to realize this: he has the vigorous presence and the agility of a man half his age. Working days and the monthly time table of activities are increasingly busy and crowded. This routine is strenuous and keeps ahead of an inquisitive, warm hearted acceptance of life which, in the Hertfordshire countryside, is stable and of a disarming simplicity, but domestic equilibrium is continually encroached upon by the pressure of outside events, demands, and visitors. A characteristically North country sense of responsibility makes it almost impossible for Moore to refuse to play his part in the committee work and public duties of all kinds that he is so often asked to undertake. No artist can ever have been so unassuming in manner, so ready to give precious time to strangers or to contingencies which almost anyone else would evade.
Moore has never insulated himself against the outside world. A natural curiosity and gregariousness remain, undiminished. His conduct with us is briskly, enthusiastically straightforward: he has a relaxed, unpretentious attitude towards people, always alive with humour, which is precisely the same for everyone whether a student apprentice, a workman, a journalist, or the director of a state museum. He has sustained a basic and very real sense of camaraderie with fellow artists. A personal approach to other work generated by ideas and principles alien to his own, is almost invariably sympathetic and positive. He has always been ready to meet, help and encourage young artists. His influence all over the world, if only as an example for endeavour, has been incalculable.
