Book Extract

Auguste Rodin has been described as the greatest sculptor since Michelangelo. Certainly, his work has a depth and range that reflect his vitality, energy and innovative approach. At the same time, this exhibition clearly shows that Rodin was deeply influenced by the greatest traditions of sculpture.

An individualist and, as a consequence, a somewhat solitary man, Rodin's work exhibits such controlled force and power as to justify the description of him as "the greatest thinker in stone in modern times". And yet, it is clear from some of the works that this man who succeeded in imbuing his sculptures with such a sense of vitality could also imbue them with a deep sense of serenity when the sculpture demanded it.
